| Again, two Jews, three opinions.
First, you must recognize that many, many Jews are not observant and have no particular agenda for religious heritage. But even among the observant I've found a variety of expectations or speculations-
1) Messiah is an age, a time period- not a person, per se'.
2) Messiah is an aggregate of people- not one single individual.
3) Messiah is the nation of Israel itself. (This comes from a constant awareness of their national experience as a "suffering servant", "called from Egypt", abused throughout history, and waiting to be exalted.)
4) Messiah is one single (Jesus-like) individual that we have not yet seen.
5) Messiah is actually a composite of two individuals/entities- Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah ben David. One who will be the suffering servant and one who will be the royal leader of the people who ushers in the new age.
6) Messiah is an experience that is building throughout history- Jesus may have been part of it, and also Hillel, and Gamaliel, and (for some, perhaps, Mother Theresa and Ghandi and...)
In other words, be careful if you try to concretely express what "Messiah" is before you try to determine whether or not they are still looking for Messiah.
