Among other roles in life I have taught on the collegiate level. I've served as a professor in two areas: The History of the Holocaust and 2nd Temple History. As a result I've spent a lot of time dealing with this structure called "Herod's Temple". Yes, you're right, it's that same Herod who was the butcher of innocent children in Bethlehem.

On the other hand Herod was, without question, one of the great builder/designers of all time, probably without peer in world history. But he was also one of the most viscious political maneuverers the world has ever seen, too. He was smart enough to know that the Jews would never really accept him as king- first because he wasn't Jewish (he was Idumean) and it went down hill from there.

That massive 85 year long project was an attempt to bribe the Jews into loving him. It didn't work.
